New Bedford, MA – May 21, 2015: Whelan Associates, a leading provider of strategic real estate services, announces the purchase and renovation of 70 North Second Street in the downtown New Bedford Waterfront Historic District in preparation for the relocation of their headquarters.
70 North Second Street, also known as the Haile Luther House, was built in 1840 on the corner of 3rd Street (now Acushnet Avenue) and Grinnell Street in New Bedford. When this historic structure was threatened with demolition in 1977, the Waterfront Historic Area LeaguE (WHALE) purchased and relocated the building to its present location on the corner of North Second and Elm Street where it was zoned for residential and commercial use. The former site of the Bristol County Convention & Visitors Bureau, 70 North Second Street resides within both the Bedford-Landing National Register District and the New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park.
WHALE architect F. Leslie Ford called the Haile Luther House “one of the finest examples of Greek Revival residential architecture in the City.”
Whelan Associates has invested in extensive renovations to repair and improve the building, taking extra measures to preserve its historic identity and natural character. Upgrades include the installation of iron railings, remanufacture and replacement of the exterior trim, exterior and interior painting, restoration of the three original fireplaces to working condition, refinishing of the original plank flooring, grand central staircase restoration, reset of the front granite steps, bluestone walkway installation, new energy efficient windows remanufactured to the exact profile of the original windows, sprayed foam insulation inside all exterior walls, state-of-the-art energy efficient Unicco HVAC system and more.
Whelan Associates currently operates out of the Sandpiper Air building on Airport Road in New Bedford. They will officially relocate on June 4th, 2015. Whelan Associates will occupy the first and second floors of 70 North Second Street, while Whelan Construction, a division of Whelan Associates, will occupy the Elm Street level. The new space, which includes two conference rooms, two kitchenettes, open receptionist area, and seven offices, will better accommodate the steadily growing business and expanding employee and associates’ needs.
“We are excited to relocate back to Downtown New Bedford and are extremely proud of our new headquarters and our success at balancing the preservation of the building’s historic fabric with modern business needs,” said William Whelan, President of Whelan Associates. Former downtown locations of Whelan Associates included previous development projects at Bourne Counting House (1 Merrill’s Wharf) and Union Square (174 Union Street).
